I try to avoid buying packaged snack foods, since they tend to cost more than the no-frills nuts and dried fruit you can buy in bulk -- so this box is just full of guilty pleasures. The Late July mini cheddar cheese sandwich crackers are savory and addictive. The cinnamon toast Pretzel Crisps are sweet but not decadently so. Mrs. Maya's Cashew Crunch... oh my... what can I say? Maybe I'm just a sucker for the salty-sweet combination. But I definitely anticipate hearing Mrs. Maya's siren song calling me to the grocery store as soon as I finish this bag.
The GoPicnic ready-to-eat peanut butter + crackers meal surprised me by containing unsweetened applesauce (yummy), Annie's cheddar bunny crackers (also yummy), and gummy bears (again, yummy).
I was definitely wary of the three bean salad-in-a-can... a little more so after I took off the packaging to reveal a packet of something called "Gourmet Culinary Sauce". In any case, I heated the salad part up (I generally don't find beans all that appealing at room temperature) and ate it using the little fork provided. It was actually quite tasty. My Senegal parrot had a bite and seemed to approve as well. (I tried a couple bites with the Culinary Sauce and it added a kind of nonspecific sweetness that I found unfavorable.) So, overall, it was pleasant and filling -- though I do find it odd that the only such salad they could find is a product of France. (No slight against France, of course -- it just struck me as a little out of place among the other foods, which I think are all US products with the additional exception of the Sharkies.)
I feel like the Clif Bar and Sharkies are an especially nice feature to this care package, because many recipients will see them and immediately think, "Oh, those will be good to have next time I do some kind of exercise." You're enabling them to fuel another part of their lives. (And if they don't already make time for exercise, it may at least get them thinking about it, and give them one less excuse to sit around conserving energy.)
This is definitely a five-star care package to me. As a vegetarian, it was great to have a package of food in which everything is suitable for me to eat. No jerky sticks or lunch meat here! Of course, if you live in the same town as the recipient, or if the recipient is yourself, it would be more affordable to just go buy these items at the grocery store. But if you're using it for its intended purpose, I think it's worth the money. It's a convenient, very well-rounded assortment of goodies.
